When the nimble-fingered Hotzenplotz steals Grandma's cherished musical coffee grinder, Constable Dimpfelmoser is called into action. While he consults the fortune teller Schlotterbeck, Kasperl and Seppel try to catch the robber themselves. Hotzenplotz sets a trap for them and sells Kasperl to the sorcerer Petrosilius Zwackelmann.

"I steal what I like; that's what everyone knows me for," boasts Hotzenplotz – in his eyes, he's the most famous robber for miles around. If he hadn't stolen Grandma's cherished coffee grinder (of all things), then Kasperl and Seppel wouldn't have set out on a perilous pursuit of the villain and they wouldn't have swapped their hats ("so the robber won't recognise us"). Then perhaps Constable Dimpfelmoser would never have met Schlotterbeck the fortune teller with her croc-dog Wasti (a dog that has been turned into a crocodile). And the beautiful fairy Amaryllis would still be a disgusting toad wasting away in the evil magician Zwackelmann's dungeon. But in the end everyone gets their just desserts: fairy-weed, potatoes, a miniature castle, a golden carriage full of sand - and Grandma gets her coffee grinder back.
