Bamboo Theatre

Bamboo Theatre is an annual cultural event during which temporary theatres made of bamboo poles appear in different corners of Hong Kong: fishing villages, towns, islands, and urban areas. First appearing as early as 150 years ago, Bamboo Theatre is a uniquely-preserved intangible cultural heritage in Hong Kong combining stage construction skills, folk customs, and opera art all in one experience. The film richly records the different groups of people present in this cultural venue: how theatre masters build a theatre space that can accommodate thousands of people; how the villagers participate in the activities of entertaining the gods and people; how the troupes stage thrilling performances. Through the lens, the audience will walk among them, listen to their conversations, understand their lives, and feel the charm of these theatres.
