"History is being made. For 21-year old Alex (Daniel Brühl) nothing is moving forward. Just before the fall of the Berlin wall, his mother (Katrin Saß), a loyal citizen of the GDR, falls into a coma after a heart attack - and sleeps through the triumph of capitalism. When she miraculously opens her eyes again after eight months, she wakes up in a new country. She didn’t witness western cars and fast-food chains overrunning the East, nor how Coca Cola simply washes away decades of socialism and how hastily what belongs together is made to grow together. She cannot find out about any of this. Her weak heart is too fragile to survive all this upheaval.
Alex is granted a temporary respite. To save his mother, he now has to revive the GDR in their 79 square meter apartment. He quickly realizes that the plan is more difficult to implement than expected.
