The Hunter

The Hunter is based on true facts and tells the story of Saverio Barone, a prosecutor who, in the early '90s when he was just thirty, became the protagonist of the hunt for the Mafia in the days following the massacres of Capaci and Via D'Amelio, where judges Falcone and Borsellino lost their lives. A prosecutor who brought the entire Corleone Mafia to its knees, he sent hundreds of Mafiosi behind bars. A climb made of intuition, instinct and ambition begins when Saverio, an emerging prosecutor in the public prosecutor's office of Termini Imerese, decides to denounce his boss, Salvatore Donà, suspected of collusion with the Mafia. It’s a choice that threatens to end his career forever, but attracts the attention of Andrea Elia, the new chief prosecutor of Palermo, who offers Saverio to join his anti-Mafia pool. At the Palermo prosecutor's office, he is the youngest and least experienced, so his older colleagues treat him with condescension. They call him cacanidu - the one who still shits in the nest, the last bird of the brood and usually the first to die. Saverio soon proves his talent and earns the right to face absolute evil when he is assigned to investigate Leoluca Bagarella and Giovanni Brusca, Mafia bosses accused of hundreds of murders. Bagarella and Brusca were behind the murder of Giovanni Falcone, as well as the kidnapping and imprisonment of twelve-year-old Giuseppe Di Matteo, whose sole guilt is being the son of a Mafia repentant. A daily confrontation with horror leads Saverio to isolate himself in his obsession and destroy everything good that he built over the years, starting with his relationship with Giada, who only a few months before gave him a daughter, Carlotta. An investigation also leads him to confront his own past when he comes across Raja, the young man who had taught him the secrets of hunting in the woods of Bivona, his hometown, and who now works for the same fugitives Saverio is investigating. A challenge between a boy who has become a man and his mentor ensues. The Hunter is the story of the descent into hell of a young prosecutor, but it also recounts the private life of those bloodthirsty bosses he hunts down. We recount the vicissitudes of Leoluca Bagarella, Don Luchino, supreme head of the Palermo Mafia, who despite his power lives in pain for being unable to have a child with his wife Vincenzina. We dig into the anger of Giovanni Brusca, who can't stand his eternal condition as a fugitive and dreams of building a castle - his villa in Borgo Molara – and ousting Bagarella from his throne as the boss of bosses. We see the point of view of Tony Calvaruso, Bagarella's young driver, who deludes himself that he can live and get rich thanks to the Mafia, without having to dirty his hands and conscience.
