During the Imjin War in July of 1592, the fleets commanded by the Left Jeolla Navy Admiral Yi Sun-shin, the Right Jeolla Navy Admiral Lee Eok-gi, and the Right Gyeongsang Navy Admiral Won Gyun formed a joint naval force that defeated the enemy invaders’ main fleet. This Battle of Hansan Island is one of the Imjin War’s three major battles, along with the Siege of Jinju (October 5-10, 1592) and the Battle of Haengju (February 12, 1593). The Battle of Hansan Island destroyed nearly the entirety of the invaders’ main fleet, blocking their plans for linked attacks on the ground and at sea. The battle also served to rally the Joseon army, which had been discouraged by repeated defeats on land.
